Tooth Extractions in Las Vegas NV
Tooth removal in Las Vegas is usually the last resort after all attempts at saving a damaged or severely decayed tooth have failed. If you have a tooth that is loose because of advanced gum disease, is broken below the gum line, or is too diseased to save, Dr. Martin may recommend extracting the tooth. Tooth removal may also be needed if a tooth is impacted (trapped in the gum or jawbone).
The Tooth Extraction Procedure
When tooth removal is needed, Dr. Martin can perform both simple and complex extractions at Delicate Oral Surgery. He numbs the area around the tooth and gums with a local anesthetic to help you be more comfortable. If needed or at your request, he may also administer some form of sedation for your comfort and to relieve any anxiety. For a simple extraction, he will rock the tooth back and forth in its socket until it loosens, then remove it with dental forceps. You will feel some pressure during the procedure, but no pain.
For more complex removals, such as longer or curved roots, Dr. Martin may “section” the tooth by cutting it into pieces and removing it one piece at a time. Impacted teeth require surgical intervention. Dr. Martin will make an incision in the gums and jawbone to access the portion of the tooth trapped beneath the surface, gently remove it, and suture the space closed.

Recovery and Aftercare
After tooth extraction, a blood clot needs to form to stop bleeding and initiate healing. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the appointment. If bleeding or oozing persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for an additional 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times to stop the bleeding.
After the blood clot forms, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot. Do not rinse vigorously, suck on straws, smoke, drink alcohol, or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities may dislodge or dissolve the clot, hindering the healing process. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this can raise blood pressure and increase bleeding at the extraction site.
After the tooth is extracted, you may feel pain and swelling. An ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Take pain medications as prescribed. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours.
Use pain medication as directed. Call our office if the medication is not working. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue taking them for the indicated length of time, even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone. Drink plenty of fluids and eat soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. You can eat normally as soon as you are comfortable.
It is important to resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours. This should include brushing and flossing your teeth at least once a day. This will speed up healing and help keep your mouth fresh and clean.
After a few days, you should feel well enough to resume your normal activities. If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, continued swelling for 2-3 days, or a reaction to the medication, call our office immediately at Delicate Oral Surgery Phone Number (702) 552-8000.
Why Choose Delicate Oral Surgery for Your Tooth Removal
Although some dentists can perform simple tooth extractions, most do so rarely. Dr. Martin conducts tooth extractions every week, often every day, continually improving his technique and taking continuing education courses to enhance his skills. Because he routinely handles complex cases, if something unexpected arises or a complication occurs during a routine tooth removal at his Las Vegas office, he is equipped to handle it professionally without referring you to another specialist.
If you need a complex or surgical tooth extraction, an oral surgeon is a must. Dr. Martin has completed several additional years of training following dental school, focusing on various surgical techniques, the anatomy of the jawbone, teeth, and facial structures, and how they work together, as well as all forms of anesthesia. All of this means he is the most qualified doctor to perform any necessary tooth removal surgery in Las Vegas.
Tooth Extractions FAQs
What can I eat after a tooth extraction?
You will eat soft foods for the first few days following a tooth extraction. Mashed potatoes, hummus, applesauce, smoothies, milkshakes, yogurt, and anything smooth and creamy are good. By the end of the week, you can begin adding firmer foods such as boiled chicken, soft-cooked vegetables, and pasta back into your diet, building up to your regular diet over several days.
How much does a tooth extraction cost in Las Vegas?
This varies depending on the difficulty of the extraction, the tooth’s location, and whether anesthesia is needed. At Delicate Oral Surgery, we endeavor to keep prices reasonable and work with several dental insurance providers. Before beginning treatment, we will provide you with a full cost breakdown so that there are no surprises.
Do tooth extractions hurt?
No. We use a local anesthetic to completely numb the tooth, the jawbone, the gum tissues, and the surrounding area. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but no pain. Once the anesthetic wears off, you will have some mild discomfort and swelling. Over-the-counter medications such as Ibuprofen and Tylenol can keep the discomfort under control. Ice packs wrapped in a towel and placed against the cheek will minimize swelling in the first few days.
How do I prevent dry socket after a tooth extraction?
A dry socket is intensely painful and typically occurs around the third day following a tooth extraction. It occurs when the blood clot covering an extraction site (an empty tooth socket) breaks off. The nerves and blood vessels in the socket are exposed to air, causing intense, throbbing pain. To prevent dry socket, follow these tips:
- Do not probe the extraction site with your fingers or tongue.
- Avoid brushing or flossing around the site for the first few days.
- Rinse your mouth gently with saltwater a few times a day.
- Elevate your head when resting for the first few days.
- Do not drink through a straw, suck on candy, or smoke.
- Do not eat hard or sticky foods that could dislodge the clot.
- Do not smoke.
- Stay hydrated.
